LED downlights have been around for quite a while, but have only recently grown in popularity. This is because as technology has advanced, LED lights have become much more energy efficient, brighter and far more economical, than other types of lighting.

They are rapidly taking over from incandescent lights in both residential and commercial buildings and as the LED technology continues to advance, we expect that LED lights will continue to take a larger part of the market in the coming years.

LED lights can be used in most applications, from homes and shops, to electronic instruments in the aerospace or automotive industries, the military and even in the entertainment industry.

So why are LED lights so popular?

5 Benefits of LED lighting

  • Longer life expectancy

LED downlights have a life expectancy of up to 60,000 hours and can last 133 times as long as incandescent lights and 10 times as long as compact fluorescent lights. When you install LED lighting you not only reduce your lighting bill, but your maintenance costs as well, compared to equivalent fluorescent and incandescent lights.

As expected however, the longer you leave your LED lights switched on, the lower their life expectancy. As an example, if you leave an LED light switched on for 4 hours each day, it will last for about 34 years before it needs to be replaced; if you leave the LED light on for 24 hours every day, then it will last for 6 years – much longer than incandescent or fluorescent lighting.

  • Increased energy efficiency

LED lights consume up to 90% less power than equivalent incandescent bulbs, making this a great strategy to reduce your power bills. This low power usage also means that LEDs are becoming very popular in remote areas, which rely on solar panels for their energy source. Despite LED lights costing more to initially purchase, they more than make up for this in their energy saving and cost savings, compared to other types of bulbs.

  • Increased durability and shock resistance

LED lights are extremely durable and can withstand rough handling, vibrations and impacts, much more readily than other types of lighting. This is because they use semiconductor material, instead of a fragile filament and have a tiny chip which is protected in an epoxy resin.

It is these differences, which give LED lighting its strength and durability and is another reason that it is so cost effective over the long term.

  • Increased safety – one of the most important features of LED lights

When switched on, LED downlights do not become hot to touch, making them a very safe alternative to the other light sources. They actually generate hardly any heat at all, even when left on for long periods of time. This is because LEDs only produce 3.4 btus each hour, compared to incandescent bulbs, which produce 85 btus per hour.

So the reason that incandescent bulbs are so hot to the touch, is that they expend 90% of their energy as heat and not light. Since LEDs only use a fraction of this energy and because they are constructed so differently, they are cool to the touch and therefore much safer than other types of light bulbs.

  • Environmental safety of LED lights

Unlike fluorescent lighting which uses a small amount of mercury in their manufacturing process, LED lights are free from any toxic chemicals or materials, so they are very good for the environment. They are also easily recyclable, which is another bonus for our planet and a big tick for LED lights.

You can purchase LED lights in lots of different colours and since they do not use filaments to create light, the number of colours is just about endless.
