The same team, whether it's a repair or a full upgrade
Russo Electrical has been diagnosing and repairing switchboard faults across Sydney homes for more than 10 years. If a previous repair or upgrade hasn't held up, we'll find out why before we touch anything.
Real Sydney switchboard work
These are completed Russo Electrical jobs, not stock images or renders. Each board was assessed, repaired or upgraded, tested and clearly labelled for the home it protects.

Call Russo ElectricalWe diagnose the fault before recommending the fix
A tripping breaker is a warning, not a diagnosis. The cause could be an appliance, damaged cable, loose connection, overloaded circuit or worn protective device. We isolate and test the circuit methodically so the repair addresses the real problem.
Breaker keeps tripping
Safety switch will not reset
One circuit has lost power
Buzzing, heat or a burning smell
Intermittent power faults
A note on older boards and asbestos
Switchboards installed before the mid-1980s sometimes use backing boards containing asbestos. If we identify a suspected asbestos backing board while diagnosing a fault, it's not something we'll disturb, drill or cut into to get at wiring behind it.
We'll tell you what we've found and what the correct next step is. Removal of asbestos material must be handled by an appropriately licensed removalist, and we'll factor that into how the repair is sequenced rather than working around it.
Finding the fault, not just silencing it
A breaker that keeps tripping is a symptom, not the diagnosis. Resetting it and walking away doesn't tell you why it happened. We isolate circuits systematically to find where the actual fault is, then repair that specific point.
Before: repeated trips, unclear cause, every circuit still a question mark
After: the specific faulty circuit found, tested, repaired, and confirmed
Intermittent faults can take longer to pin down than a constant one, since sometimes it takes reproducing the conditions that trigger it. We'll explain what we're ruling in and out as we go, rather than working silently.
Repair or full upgrade?
Repair may be suitable when
The fault is isolated to a breaker, RCD, termination or individual circuit and the rest of the board remains serviceable.
An upgrade may be recommended when
The board lacks appropriate safety protection, is badly damaged, has no practical capacity, contains components that cannot be repaired sensibly, or no longer provides a safe foundation for the home.
We will show you what we found and explain the options. The diagnosis comes first. If a full switchboard upgrade is genuinely the right call, we'll say so and explain why.
When a previous repair or upgrade has not solved the problem
If a breaker, RCD or circuit has already been "fixed" once and the same fault has returned, that usually means the underlying cause was never actually found. This is the same defect video we use on our upgrade page. It's relevant here because it shows exactly the kind of repeat-fault situation we're regularly called out to sort properly.
Fault-finding and repair, not a rebuild
This service is about resolving a specific problem at the board. If the assessment shows the board itself needs replacing, we'll say so separately, since it's not bundled in by default.
Fault diagnosis
Systematic isolation to find which circuit, connection or device is actually causing the trip, drop-out or fault.
Breaker and RCD replacement
Swapping a worn, faulty or nuisance-tripping circuit breaker or safety switch for a correctly rated replacement.
Loose and damaged connection repair
Re-terminating loose, corroded or heat-damaged connections found at the board, a common cause of intermittent faults.
Overloaded circuit assessment
Checking whether a circuit is tripping simply because it's carrying more load than it should, and what to do about it.
Minor component replacement
Replacing individual damaged parts, such as a cracked enclosure section, a failed indicator or a worn isolator, where a full rebuild isn't warranted.
Testing and Certificate of Compliance
The repaired circuit is tested before we leave, with a Certificate of Compliance issued for the work carried out.
Resetting a breaker isn't the same as fixing the problem
A breaker or RCD that keeps tripping is doing its job. It's telling you something downstream isn't right. Repeatedly resetting it without finding the cause just means the underlying fault is still there, waiting for the next trip. Diagnosis first means the repair actually addresses what's wrong.
We diagnose before we replace anything
- We won't upsell a replacement you don't need. If a repair genuinely resolves the fault, that's what we'll do and quote for.
- We're honest when a repair isn't the right call. If the board's genuinely beyond sensible repair, or has no safety switch protection at all, we'll tell you and explain why. That's a different conversation to a like-for-like fix.
- We explain what we find. You'll know what the fault was, why it happened, and what we did about it, not just “it's fixed now.”
- We're upfront about asbestos. If a backing board is suspect while we're working, we say so and sequence the repair correctly instead of disturbing it.
What happens when you call us out
Tell us the symptom
What's tripping, when it happens, and anything that seems to trigger it. This helps us come prepared rather than starting from scratch on site.
Diagnose on site
We isolate circuits systematically to identify the actual fault, rather than assuming based on symptoms alone.
Explain what we found
You get a clear explanation of the cause and the repair options, including if a bigger issue means an upgrade is worth considering.
Repair the fault
The identified fault is repaired: a replaced breaker, a re-terminated connection, or whatever the diagnosis pointed to.
Test and certify
The repaired circuit is tested, and a Certificate of Compliance issued for the work carried out.
What affects the cost of switchboard support?
Fault-finding is inherently variable. Some faults are obvious in minutes, others take longer to reproduce. The main factors are:
- How straightforward or intermittent the fault is to reproduce
- Number of circuits potentially involved
- Whether parts (breakers, RCDs, enclosure components) need replacing
- Access to the board and general wiring condition
- Whether the fault points to a bigger issue needing separate scoping
- Standard hours or an urgent/after-hours call-out
Tell us what's happening: when it trips, what's plugged in, whether it's constant or occasional, and we'll give you an honest idea of what to expect before we arrive.

Straight answers before you book
My breaker keeps tripping. Do I need a whole new switchboard?
Usually not. A breaker that trips repeatedly is more often a sign of a specific fault, such as an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, a loose connection or a worn breaker, than a reason to replace the whole board. We diagnose the actual cause before recommending anything that large.
Can you fix it the same day?
Often, yes, if the fault is straightforward to isolate and the needed part is something we carry. Intermittent or unusual faults can take longer to reproduce and confirm. We'll be upfront if we think it's a same-visit fix or something that needs a follow-up.
Will you tell me honestly if I actually need an upgrade instead?
Yes. If the fault-finding shows the board itself is beyond a sensible repair, has no RCD protection, or the underlying issue is bigger than the symptom suggests, we'll say so clearly and separately from the repair quote. It's your call what to do next.
What if the fault is intermittent and doesn't happen while you're there?
Intermittent faults are the hardest to catch. We'll ask what conditions seem to trigger it and try to reproduce them, check for the common causes of intermittent faults (loose connections, thermal issues, worn components), and explain what we've ruled in or out even if we don't catch it live on the first visit.
Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping?
Occasionally resetting a breaker that trips for a known, benign reason (like an overloaded power board) is generally fine. Repeated or unexplained tripping is worth getting looked at. It's the board telling you something's wrong, and repeatedly resetting it doesn't fix the underlying cause.
What if my switchboard contains asbestos?
Backing boards in some older installations contain asbestos. If we identify a suspected asbestos board while diagnosing a fault, we won't disturb it. We'll explain what we've found and arrange for it to be handled by an appropriately licensed removalist as part of the repair sequencing.
Do you offer emergency or after-hours call-outs?
For anything involving a burning smell, visible sparks, or a board that's hot to touch, turn off the main switch if it's safe to reach and call us straight away. Get in touch to confirm current availability for urgent call-outs in your area.
Will I get documentation for the repair?
Yes. We issue a Certificate of Compliance for the electrical work carried out, covering the specific repair completed. Worth keeping for insurance, sale or future reference.
